Is it running? Is it hiking? Is it weight lifting? Is it yoga or dance?
Here’s the big reveal – The ONE AND ONLY perfect exercise is…..drum roll please… the one you want to do, whatever at all that might be!
If you had the chance to read one of my recent posts sharing the insight that — “weight loss and fitness programs don’t fail because we don’t know what to do, rather they fail because we don’t do it”, then this post will make perfect sense.
Are there exercises and activities that burn more calories compared to others? Sure. Of course. Are there exercises and activities that might address quite directly something that would be especially helpful to working on your particular issues? Sure. Of Course. Is any of that any good to you if you are not inclined to do them and therefore will not do them consistently and for the long haul? No, not if you are not ready for them nor hold any enthusiasm for doing them regularly.
“First things first,” my friends. The way you are going to get moving and get active, burn the calories and reach your goals, is to pick an exercise that sounds good to you. Something that you’d look forward to when you get out of bed in the morning. Walking the dog in the park. A swim at the community center. That yoga or dance class. No pressure. Just fun. That’s where you need to start. You can see if it leads to trying other exercises and activities that are, right now, outside your comfort zone. It probably will. But no pressure. What’s most important is that you do, not what you do.
What most programs for weight loss and fitness don’t consider is that you need choices. You need the flexibility to change things up when you get bored. You need challenging choices for the times when you want to sweat, and simple choices when the energy needle is a little to the left. And the more you engage in exercise and activity that you enjoy, the more you will be open to trying new things.
Here are the 5 things you can do:
1- Let go of the pressure and get comfortable with the idea that the perfect exercise or activity is the one you look forward to.
2- Make a list of 3 to 5 exercises or activities that you feel are fun and interesting to you.
3- That’s your list. Each day, or every other day, no pressure, pick the one that suits the day. Challenging when you’re ready for it, and calmer when that’s the mood.
4- Do it. You will because it’s what you want to do. You got to pick.
5- Try something new when you are ready. Try something more challenging or quite different from what you usually do. BUT – only when you are ready. No pressure. Because the most important thing is that you don’t lose enthusiasm for staying active and exercising your way.
If this makes sense to you check out how the Excer – Selector tool works. It’s part of the A2BFastFit – First Things First system. You’ll find over 150 exercises and activities to consider. And the fun interactive tool tells you exactly how many calories you’ll burn doing the exercise or activity that you chose for you!
